Previously located at 3911 Dillard St. off the downtown thoroughfare,
Spa Wags opened in mid-February at 4440 Marietta St. after outgrowing the house in which it operated at 3911 Dillard St. right off Marietta Street, says owner Kimberly Hicks.
“We wanted to get more involved in the community, so the space we’re in now worked out perfectly. I love walking outside and being able to see events and happenings, like the midday concerts,” Hicks said, alluding to Spa Wags’ entry door, which faces downtown’s Thurman Springs Park.
“It’s really good energy right now, because a lot of times, there’s children outside, families, people walking their dogs. It’s really been an upgrade for us,” Hicks adds.
Following its last day at its old location on Dec. 23, 2023, Spa Wags reopened to its four-legged clientele in its new location about two months later during the third week in February 2024. "I got to see how loyal and loving my team and my clients are, because everyone hung with me during the wait,” Hicks said.
A 17-year veteran of the pet grooming business having started right after college, Hicks has been the owner of Spa Wags for the last five years out of the total seven she has been with the establishment. In the 10 years prior, she worked for PetSmart, at which she groomed pets and trained groomers for the company.
Her Spa Wags team includes three groomers who each bring 15 years of their own experience, with another having a decade under their belt. Many of their customers have used their services for much of that time.
“A lot of my groomers have relationships with these people over years. I myself have relationships with some of my clients over 10 years,” Hicks says. “We try to make it a family environment and really care about the pets while they’re here, make sure that they’re safe and that they look good.”
Spa Wags offers all grooming services, including but not limited to baths, haircuts, nail clippings, ear hair plucking and ear cleaning, and more. Ultimately, Hicks says, a clean dog is a more healthy dog.
“We make them look cute, pretty and clean, and it’s actually really good for their health as well — some dogs can get matted or have skin irritations or allergies, so it’s really good for overall health to keep your pet groomed.”
The cleaned canines then have their pictures taken for display on Spa Wags’ social media channels, oftentimes with seasonal props or digital backdrops. For instance, the shop’s late-April photographic posts showed pooches on the beach at a time when families may be ready for the school year’s end and summer’s beginning.
Powder Springs is an “up-and-coming town,” Hicks says, adding that while it didn’t have a lot of businesses when it first opened its doors seven years ago, it has “opened up a lot more.”
"It’s just exciting to be a part of that,” Hicks added.
